The concept that good design, functionality,
and innovation are primary concerns of successful architecture
is illustrated in the new home for the state offices of the
AIA. The modernist building housing the offices provides a
minimalist, airy space with its floor-to-ceiling window wall
overlooking trees below and establishes the parameters for
the interior design.
The open-plan reception and clerical areas located at the
center of the space work for both everyday activities as well
as for hosted social and political events. Each area is defined
by unusually shaped walls that are rendered in natural organic
finishes. The richness and variety of the material palette
creates a restrained yet visually rich interior. 2002 Winner
